Making caramel can be a delicate and time-sensitive process, but did you know you can create this sweet treat using an air fryer? While traditional methods rely on stovetop cooking, the air fryer offers a unique, hands-free approach that can simplify the process, especially for beginners. However, there are certain tips and tricks to keep in mind to ensure your caramel comes out perfectly every time.
When making caramel in an air fryer, it's crucial to use a heat-resistant dish that can withstand high temperatures. Opt for oven-safe glass, ceramic ramekins, or silicone molds. Avoid using plastic or metal containers as they may not conduct heat evenly or could damage your air fryer.
Caramel is sensitive to temperature changes, and the air fryer’s heat setting can fluctuate, so it's important to keep an eye on it. For best results, set your air fryer to a medium temperature (around 320°F or 160°C). Too high a heat can cause the sugar to burn quickly, leaving a bitter taste.
Just like with an oven, preheating your air fryer can ensure that the caramel heats evenly and melts smoothly. Preheat the air fryer for a few minutes before placing the sugar mixture inside. This step can help prevent crystallization and ensure even caramelization.
Caramel can go from perfectly golden to burnt in just a few seconds. When making caramel on the stovetop, you’re often told not to stir too much to avoid crystallization, but with an air fryer, occasional stirring is necessary to prevent burning
To make the caramelizing process smoother, add a little bit of water or lemon juice to the sugar before placing it in the air fryer. This will help dissolve the sugar evenly and prevent it from crystallizing as it melts.
