During Navratri fasting, sattvic foods are allowed, including fresh fruits, dairy products, vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin, and flours like kuttu (buckwheat) and singhara (water chestnut). Grains like rice and wheat are avoided. Regular cheese, such as cheddar or mozzarella, is generally not recommended during Navratri fasts.
Fresh, non-processed cheese like paneer (Indian cottage cheese) is commonly consumed during Navratri. Avoid processed or aged cheeses like cheddar or mozzarella, which may contain additives or preservatives that are not allowed during the fast.
Many people prefer homemade paneer to ensure it complies with fasting rules. Paneer made from cow's milk is considered sattvic, meaning pure and permissible during the fast.
If you're eating cheese, paneer or other dairy products, ensure they do not contain regular table salt. Rock salt (sendha namak) is allowed during fasting.
Some packaged cheeses may have added ingredients like preservatives or enzymes that are not acceptable for a Navratri fast. It's important to check labels if buying from the store.
Paneer and other soft cheeses can be a good source of protein, especially for vegetarians who rely on dairy during fasting.
