Summer season is synonymous with watermelon and all for the right reasons. Oftentimes, you bring a whole watermelon and are left with extra. Can you keep the watermelon in the fridge? Yes, you can. Keeping it in the fridge can help maintain freshness and extend its shelf life. If the fruit is ripe or have already been cut the watermelon, refrigeration is recommended. The cool temperature slows down the degradation process, preserving the fruit’s taste and texture. Besides, here are some tips to keep watermelon fresh:
Once the watermelon is ripe, store it in the fridge to keep it fresh. Whole watermelons can be stored for up to 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator.
After cutting, place the pieces in an airtight container or wrap them tightly in plastic wrap. This prevents the fruit from drying out and keeps it fresh for up to 4-5 days.
Maintain a consistent refrigerator temperature of about 4°C. Avoid placing the watermelon near the freezer section to prevent it from getting too cold and losing its texture.
Excess moisture can cause watermelon to spoil quickly. Pat the cut pieces dry with a paper towel before storing them in the fridge.
Always use clean, dry containers for storing cut watermelon to avoid contamination and the growth of bacteria.
