While the origins of this cocktail are not very clear, it is believed to be Brazil’s national cocktail. But what makes it so special?
The name is derived from a Portuguese word which is used for someone from the countryside. Based on this and a few theories, it is believed to have originated in Portugal.
Interestingly, it became Brazil’s national cocktail and is often called Brazilian mojito. It is the alcoholic base of the drink that makes it so distinct.
A concoction of lime juice, sugar syrup and ice cubes, the alcoholic content comes from Cachaca, a hard liquor made from fermented sugarcane. This serves as the specialty of the drink.
• 60ml cachaca/ vodka • 1 lime • 20ml sugar syrup • Ice cubes
• Start with the lime. Cut 2-4 lime wedges and add to the glass. • Take a glass filled with ice cubes, fill with sugar syrup and then Cachaca. • Caipirinha is ready to drink and chill. • If you prefer, decorate with shredded peppermint leaves. • In place of Cachaca, vodka is commonly used as an alternative.
