Mango season is here already! Buying mangoes isn't exactly a cakewalk since identifying a mango's freshness is quite an ordeal. It depends on several key factors like softness, smell, time of harvest and many more things. Here are some quick and easy tips to locate the freshest mangoes in the market!
The colour of a mango is not always the best indicator of ripeness, as it varies depending on the variety. However, ripe mangoes generally have vibrant colors with no green patches. Look for mangoes that are mostly yellow or orange, with a slight blush of red or pink. Avoid mangoes with wrinkled or shriveled skin.
Ripe mangoes should yield slightly to gentle pressure when squeezed, similar to a ripe peach or avocado. Avoid mangoes that are too firm, as they may be underripe and lacking in flavor. At the same time, be cautious of mangoes that are overly soft or mushy, as they may be overripe and past their prime.
The stem end of a mango is where it was attached to the tree, and it can provide clues about the fruit's ripeness. Take a whiff of the stem end – ripe mangoes emit a sweet and fruity aroma, while unripe mangoes have little to no scent. If the mango smells fragrant and tropical, it's likely ripe and ready to eat.
