Bread Upma is a quick and easy South Indian dish made by tossing bread pieces with mustard seeds, curry leaves, onions, tomatoes, and spices. Light and tasty, it’s a great way to use leftover bread and is often enjoyed as a breakfast or evening snack with tea.
6-8 slices of bread 1 onion 1 tomato 1-2 green chillies 1 small carrot 1/4 cup green peas
1/4 tsp mustard seeds 1/4 tsp cumin seeds 1/4 tsp turmeric powder 1/4 tsp red chilli powder A pinch of asafoetida (hing) 8-10 curry leaves 2 tbsp oil or ghee Salt Fresh coriander leaves
Cut the bread slices into small cubes and set aside. In a pan, heat the oil or ghee and add the mustard seeds and let them splutter.
Add the cumin seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds.
Add the chopped onions and green chillies. Add the chopped carrots and green peas. Cook for a few minutes until the vegetables are tender.
Add the bread cubes to the pan. Cook for a few minutes until the bread absorbs the flavours and becomes slightly crispy. Turn off the heat and garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
