Birra Roti is a North Indian flatbread that is soft and flavourful, it is made with whole wheat flour, spices and a hint of ghee. It is a comfort food for any meal, here are steps to make Birra Roti at home and bring a bit of rustic India to your table.
2 cups atta (whole wheat flour) ½ cup water (as needed) ½ tsp ajwain (carom seeds) ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp red chilli powder 2 tbsp ghee (for kneading and brushing)
In a large bowl, add atta, ajwain, salt and red chilli powder. Mix well.
Add water slowly and knead till you get a soft dough. Cover and rest for 15-20 minutes.
Divide the dough into small balls and roll each one into a thin round shape with a rolling pin.
Place the rolled roti on a tawa (griddle) and cook till small bubbles appear.
Flip and brush with ghee. Cook both sides till golden brown spots appear.
Repeat with the remaining dough. Serve with dal, curries or chutneys.
