Puri is an integral part of the Ashtami bhog. Round, fluffy puris are served with curries and dry sabzi.
To complete the meal, people make seasonal vegetables like pumpkin or okra. These are staples in North India.
To bring everything together, curries like matar paneer, aloo tamatar, or chhole are prepared but without onion and garlic.
Spice kala chana is quintessential to Navratri thali. It is offered to Goddess Durga and distributed among kanya.
Sooji halwa is another staple added to the festive spread. It can be prepared quickly and refrigerated for a few days.
In most households, rice kheer is prepared and offered to the Goddess. Puri is topped with halwa and kheer, and distributed as prasad.
Since Chaitra Navratri mark the beginning of summer, boondi or kheera raita is also added to the spread for its cooling properties.
