Made with toor dal, goda masala, coconut, jaggery and kokum, this Maharashtrian delight is a perfect combination of tangy and spicy flavours. Here is a simple recipe to make amti dal at home.

1 cup split pigeon peas (soaked), ¼ tsp turmeric powder, 1 ½ tsp olive oil, 1 1/2 tablespoons, 5-6 curry leaves, 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp red chilli powder, salt to taste, 2 tbsp tamarind pulp, 1 tbsp jaggery (grated), 1 tsp goda masala

Pressure cook toor dal with 2 cups water and turmeric till 3 whistles. Heat oil in a kadai and add curry leaves, mustard and chilli powder.

Once the seeds splutter, stir in cooked dal. As it begins to boil add salt, tamarind pulp and jaggery. Stir in 1 cup of hot water and let the dal boil for 6-8 minutes.

Add goda masala and adjust consistency. Continue to simmer the dal for 3-4 minutes. Serve hot with roti or rice.
