The holy month of Sawan is going on and this year it will be observed for two months, which is known as Adhik Maas. If you’re following Savan Somvar fasts and is confused as what to eat and what to avoid, we have a solution for you. Here we have collated 8 foods that should be avoided if you’re observing fasts. Sweets and desserts are essential part of festivals and fasts, however, its rich composition, containing dairy and high-calorie sugar, contradicts the dietary restrictions commonly observed during fasting.

If you’re observing fast in Savan Somvar, avoid consuming onions. It is Tamasic in nature which is believed to increase the body temperature.

Garlic also has a strong pungent aroma which is believed to be Rajasic in nature, which in turn may increase the body temperature. Thus, it should be avoided during Savan Somvar.

Cooking food in mustard oil is strictly forbidden during Savan fasts simply because it is made with mustard seeds that raises the body temperature and stimulate the appetite

Lentils, chickpeas and other legumes are often avoided owing to their high protein content which does not align with the traditional fasting practice.
