Momos, the popular dumplings from the Himalayan regions, have become a favourite snack across India and make for a perfect snack or meal on cold, rainy days. They come in various forms and flavours, each offering a unique taste experience.
These classic momos are made with a thin flour-based dough filled with a variety of ingredients such as vegetables, chicken, or pork. They are steamed and usually served with spicy chutney.
Fried momos offer a crispy twist to the traditional steamed variety. Once filled and shaped, these momos are deep-fried, resulting in a crunchy exterior while the filling inside still remains juicy.
Tandoori momos are marinated in a blend of spices and yoghurt before being cooked in a tandoor or oven. This preparation gives them a smoky, charred flavour and a unique twist, making them a popular fusion dish.
Also known as Jhol momos, the dumplings are served in a flavourful broth or soup. They are either steamed or lightly boiled, then immersed in a spicy, tangy soup made with tomatoes, herbs, and spices. This is a comforting and hearty meal, especially during colder months.
These are a Tibetan variety made with chhurpi, a traditional hard cheese found in the Himalayan region. The cheese is grated and mixed with vegetables or herbs to create a unique and flavorful filling.
Chilly momos are a fiery and flavourful variation where the dumplings are tossed in a spicy sauce made from soy, garlic, and chillies. This Indo-Chinese fusion dish is known for its bold flavours.
For a healthier option, whole wheat momos are made using wheat flour instead of the traditional refined flour. These momos are filled with nutritious ingredients such as mixed vegetables or lean meats, offering a wholesome and guilt-free snack while maintaining the delicious taste of traditional momos.
