You wouldn't think it, but there's actually as big a list of sauces as there are pasta varieties. Pasta sauces come in a wide variety; some popular ones include pesto, alfredo, and marinara. Here’s a list.
Bolognese is a traditional Italian pasta sauce served with spaghetti or fettuccine. Bolognese, a meat-based spaghetti sauce from Bologna, Italy, is heavy on meat and mild on tomatoes.
Ragu, like bolognese, is an Italian meat sauce. Ragus are rich on meat and flavoured with a little tomato sauce.
Marinara sauce is a popular pasta sauce. This tomato-based sauce originated in Italian-American communities in the US. Marinara goes nicely with meatballs, lasagna, casseroles, and even sandwiches!
Pesto, a healthy basil-based pasta sauce, is delicious.Pesto sauce's green colour comes from basil, and since it's so light, it can be swirled into cooked pasta instead of boiled.
Another easy-to-make tomato-free pasta sauce is aglio e olio. This simple sauce requires only two ingredients, garlic and oil and spaghetti.
Alfredo is made with thick cream, butter, and cheese, not tomato sauce. Fettuccine is the perfect pasta for alfredo.
Carbonara sauce is one of the best pasta sauce alternatives to tomato-based sauces. Carbonara, like alfredo sauce, is cream-based and loaded with shredded cheese. The key difference is the egg, which helps the sauce stick to the pasta while cooking.
