7 Indian Red Cabbage Dishes You Can Make At Home

Red cabbage is a versatile vegetable that can be incorporated into various Indian dishes. It's a great source of antioxidants and can also prevent cancer, osteoporosis and heart disease. It's quite flavourful as well so it goes with quite a few desi flavours. Let's find out.

Red Cabbage Thoran

To prepare red cabbage thoran, start by heating oil in a pan and tempering mustard seeds and curry leaves. Add finely chopped red cabbage and sauté until slightly tender.  Red cabbage thoran makes for a delicious side dish to rice and curry.

Red Cabbage Sabzi

 To prepare red cabbage sabzi, heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once the seeds splutter, add finely shredded red cabbage, chopped onions, minced garlic, and tomatoes. Sauté until the cabbage is cooked and the flavours meld together.

Red Cabbage Paratha

Mix finely grated red cabbage with wheat flour, ajwain (carom seeds), red chili powder, garam masala, salt, and a little oil. Knead the dough well and let it rest. Roll out portions of the dough, place the cabbage filling in the center, seal, and roll out into parathas.

Red Cabbage Pakoda

Thinly slice red cabbage and coat them with a spiced chickpea flour batter made with besan (gram flour), rice flour, salt, red chili powder, turmeric, ajwain, and water. Deep-fry the coated cabbage slices until golden brown and crispy.

Red Cabbage Salad

For a refreshing salad, thinly slice red cabbage and mix it with grated carrots, thinly sliced onions, chopped green chilies, and fresh coriander leaves. Dress the salad with a mixture of lemon juice, salt, and a sprinkle of chaat masala.

Pickling red cabbage is a great way to preserve its vibrant colour and crunchy texture. To make red cabbage pickle, thinly slice the cabbage and marinate it with vinegar, salt, sugar, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, red chili powder, and turmeric.

Add finely shredded red cabbage and sauté until slightly tender. Then, add grated coconut, green chilies, turmeric, salt, and a pinch of sugar for balance. Stir well and cook until the cabbage is cooked through but still retains its crunchiness.
