The king of fruits – which is also a fond summer memory for everyone in India, mangoes are an essential aspect of seasonal eating. Given how diverse the landscape of our country is, mango varieties change from one region to another – remaining delicious nonetheless.
The yellow-golden haapus mango cultivated along the Konkan belt is touted to be one of the most sought-after and expensive varieties.
A thin-skinned variety that is widely grown and enjoyed in Karnataka, has similar characteristics as the alphonso, for taste and texture.
Also known as killimooku – which translates to ‘parrot’s beak’ – the totapuri mango has a greenish-yellow, slender appearance.
Unlike most other ripe mango varieties which turn yellow when ripe, the langra aam retains its lush green encasing soft and sugary pulp within.
This aromatic mango variety that is grown in Lucknow and Andhra Pradesh are considered the ‘Mother of Mangoes’ for their sweet, succulent flavours.
Derived from the saffron colour of its orange pulp, kesar mangoes have a reputation for being exceptionally sweet and juicy.
Devoid of fibrous strands, this mango variant is enjoys popular favour in West Bengal and considered to be one of the best varieties globally, for its musky sweetness.
