7 Gujarati Snacks That Are Perfect For The Monsoon

Some of India’s most popular and favourite snacks are made in Gujarat. Typically vegetarian, these snacks range from steamed and baked to fried varieties. Ingredients such as chickpea flour, rice, and lentils are common and are used to create delicious pancakes that balance sweet, savoury, and spicy tastes.

Dhokla

This steamed, savoury cake made from fermented rice and chickpea batter is light, fluffy, and slightly tangy. They are made in two varieties. White dhokla, also known as khatta dhokla, is made from fermented rice and urad dal batter,  yellow dhokla, or khaman dhokla, is prepared using gram flour.

Khandvi

Made from gram flour and yoghurt, Khandvi is a yellow rolled, spiced snack that is delicate and soft. It is typically seasoned with mustard seeds, sesame seeds, and garnished with fresh coriander.

Thepla

A spiced flatbread made with whole wheat flour, fenugreek leaves (methi), and various spices. It is perfect for a quick snack or a travel meal and is usually served with yoghurt or pickles.

Handvo

This savoury cake is made from a fermented batter of rice, lentils, and vegetables. It’s often baked or pan-cooked and has a crisp outer layer with a soft inside. 

Muthiya

A healthy, steamed snack made from chickpea flour, semolina, and grated vegetables such as bottle gourd or cabbage. These dumplings are often lightly fried after steaming for extra flavour.

Gathiya

These crispy, deep-fried snacks are made from gram flour dough and are mildly spiced. Gathiya is a popular snack to enjoy with tea, often paired with fried chillles or pickles.

Fafda

Another crunchy snack made from chickpea flour, fafda is often served with a spicy papaya chutney and fried green chillies. It is a classic combination with jalebi for Sunday breakfasts in Gujarat.
