Cooking mushrooms correctly is essential to achieve the perfect texture and flavour. Properly seared mushrooms release their natural moisture, preventing them from becoming soggy. When cooked right, they develop a rich, umami-packed taste with a firm yet tender bite, enhancing any dish.
Wipe mushrooms with a damp cloth or gently rinse and pat dry. Avoid soaking as they absorb water, affecting their texture.
Slice mushrooms uniformly to ensure even cooking and a consistent texture.
Use a wide, hot pan and avoid overcrowding to allow the mushrooms to cook evenly without steaming.
Cook on medium-high heat to release the water from the mushrooms, helping them brown nicely and maintain a firm texture.
Allow mushrooms to sit undisturbed for a few minutes to achieve a good sear before stirring.
Add salt after the mushrooms have browned, to prevent them from releasing excess moisture early on.
Add butter or oil towards the end to enhance flavour and give the mushrooms a rich, glossy texture.
