Wheat is a staple in Indian households and people often buy in bulk to prolong use. However, storing wheat for an extended period needs correct practice. Storing wheat can ensure a steady food supply, especially in uncertain times. Whether you’re a homesteader or simply a conscious consumer, knowing how to store wheat properly is essential. Here are tips to wheat fresh for long time:
Select airtight containers made of food-grade materials such as plastic buckets with tight-sealing lids. Ensure the containers are clean, dry and free from any residual odours.
Moisture is the enemy of stored wheat as it promotes mold growth and spoilage. Store wheat in a cool, dry place with low humidity.
Wheat stores best in a cool environment with stable temperatures. Aim for a storage area with temperature below 21°C. Avoid exposing wheat to extreme temperature fluctuations.
Practice FIFO (First In, First Out) rotation to ensure that older wheat gets used first before newer batches. This helps maintain freshness and prevents any wheat from expiring before use.
Keep pests such as insects and rodents at bay by thoroughly inspecting wheat before storage and using pest-proof containers. Adding bay leaves to the containers can also deter pests.
Periodically check stored wheat for signs of spoilage, such as off smells, mold growth, or insect infestation. Rotate containers and inspect seals to ensure they remain airtight.
