Can you make rasam without dal? Yes, you can. If you want to prepare a quick meal and don’t want to invest time in cooking dal or have forgotten to keep a small bowl aside from before, here is a must-try South Indian rasam recipe.
½ cup hot water ½ cup chopped tomatoes 2-3 tbsp tamarind pulp A pinch of hing 1 tsp mustard seeds ½ tsp turmeric powder 2 cups water 2-3 dry red chillies 8-10 curry leaves Salt as needed 1 tsp black pepper 3-4 chopped garlic cloves 1-2 tbsp sambar masala
Soak tamarind in water and let it rest for 10-15 minutes. Separate the pulp.
In a deep vessel, heat oil and add mustard seeds, hing, red chillies, garlic, and curry leaves.
Once garlic is slightly cooked, add tomatoes, turmeric powder, and salt to taste.
Add water after the tomatoes are mushy. Infuse flavours into rasam with black pepper and sambar mix.
Pour tamarind pulp and let the ingredients cook for 15-20 minutes.
Rasam without lentils is ready. Enjoy it with rice or South Indian snacks.
