Mushrooms belong to the fungi family but are considered excellent ingredients for consumption. Instead of buying these at a hefty price from the market, you can mushrooms at home with minimal effort. Here is your guide.
You must select the variety of mushrooms you would like to grow. Button and shiitake are the best options. Purchase seeds of the variety.
Combine wood chips, sawdust, straw, and coffee grounds to prepare the substrate. Sterilise the substrate with hot water or steam to prevent bacterial growth and molds.
When the substrate has cooled off, add mushroom seeds to it. Your hands must be clean, and distribution of seeds should be even.
For mushrooms to thrive, the environment must be humid, the surroundings must be dark, and ventilation should be there to prevent mould growth.
The vegetative part of mushrooms begins to colonise the substrate in a web-like structure. In the meantime, make sure that the environmental conditions are appropriate.
Once colonisation is complete, allow the substrate to interact with fresh air for fruiting. When caps are fully developed, you can harvest the mushrooms and enjoy them!
