Be it going off into the Himalayas for a high-altitude trek or to a local fort in the Sahyadri or to the undulations in Purulia, it is important to eat right before the trek to maintain high levels of endurance during the trail. Here are some pre-trek essentials to build-up your strength.

Oats

Load up on carbs like oats right before the trek, especially those with a lower glycaemic index that will boost endurance with very little insulin spike.

Fruits

A few days before a long trek, have plenty of fruits rich in vitamins and minerals like oranges, bananas, strawberries and papayas. These will flush out toxins from the body.

Khichdi

Carb loading in the right way is essential to build up glycogen stores before a high endurance activity. Have nourishing khichdi the night before a hike to load-up on healthy carbs.

Milk

Milk is a complete meal rich in healthy fats, carbs and protein. Start having a glass of milk at least a fortnight before the trek to load-up on good fat stores.

Curd

A healthy gut is the way to ensure a happy trek. Eat foods rich in probiotics like curd and buttermilk to cleanse your stomach and smoothen digestive processes.

Chicken

Have foods rich in protein if you are building-up healthy muscle before a particularly strenuous trek. Increase carb intake just before the trek but keep protein high during the preparatory phase.
