Indulging in a weekend drinking binge will be without regrets as long as Monday morning arrives without a hangover! Eating before drinking slows the rate at which alcohol is absorbed by the body and reduces late night food cravings. Here are some foods rich in carbs and protein which fill the stomach and are ideal meals before a drinking binge.
Eggs are an excellent source of protein and fat which keep the body feeling full for a long time. Snacking on eggs before drinking slows the emptying of the stomach which in turn slows intoxication.
The body tends to lose potassium while drinking in large proportions. Bananas are rich in electrolytes like potassium and sodium making them an ideal snack to binge on before drinking.
Greek yoghurt is a good source of protein that reduces food cravings and slows down the absorption of alcohol leading to a lowered risk of hangovers. It is also a good source of energy and keeps blood sugar levels in check.
Oats have a high fibre and nutrient content which prompt a feeling of satiety, protect liver function and reduce the pace of alcohol absorption. They can be eaten as porridge or blended into pre-drinking snacks.
This is a complex carbohydrate which takes a while to break down and keeps the stomach full for longer. Sweet potato fries are ideal munching before drinking because of their high electrolyte content.
Strawberries, blackberries, gooseberries are rich in antioxidants and can reduce alcohol-induced cell damage. Their high-water content also prevents dehydration, slows down intoxication and reduces hangovers.
