Khakhras, the thin, crunchy flatbreads from Gujarat, are a beloved snack in many Indian households. Known for their variety of flavors and satisfying crunch, khakhras are a versatile choice for breakfasts or tea-time munchies. However, keeping khakhras fresh and crispy can be challenging, especially in humid climates. To help you maintain their signature crunch and flavor, here are six simple, effective ways to store and enjoy khakhras without any compromise in texture.
One of the easiest ways to keep khakhras crispy is by storing them in airtight containers. Plastic or glass containers with secure lids work best to lock out moisture, which is the main culprit in making khakhras soggy. Avoid large containers that leave too much empty space.
When stacking khakhras in containers, place a sheet of parchment or wax paper between each layer. This prevents them from sticking together, which can sometimes lead to breakage, and also helps maintain their crispness by absorbing any excess moisture that might be present in the container.
While it might seem intuitive to store food items in direct sunlight to keep them dry, heat can actually draw moisture into the container when it cools down. Instead, store khakhras in a cool, dry place, away from any direct sunlight or warm areas, like near stoves or ovens. This will help maintain their texture for a longer period.
Silica gel packets are often included in packaged snacks to absorb moisture, and they can be highly effective in preserving the crispiness of khakhras. Placing a small, food-safe silica packet in the container can help keep moisture at bay. Make sure the packet doesn’t come in direct contact with the khakhras.
If your khakhras have become slightly soft, a quick reheat can bring back their original crunch. Place them on a low-heat skillet for a few seconds on each side, or pop them into a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for a couple of minutes. This will evaporate any moisture that might have softened them, making them crispy again.
