Identifying artificially ripe mangoes can be tricky. Look for unnaturally uniform coloration, lack of aroma, and overly soft or firm texture. Pay attention to inconsistencies in skin texture and avoid fruits with chemical odors or residues.
In a container of water, gently put the mango. When it sinks, it usually means it's ripe enough to eat. Floating is a characteristic of artificial ones.
Mangoes that have been naturally ripened have uniformly golden skins, whilst those that have been artificially ripened have green spots scattered throughout.
Halve a mango; the flesh will have a yellow or orange colour as the mango ripens naturally. The stems of artificial ones seem pale, if not white.
Mangoes should feel soft but not mushy when you gently press them. Too much or too little of either extreme suggests it is artificial.
Mangoes that have been artificially ripened have a flavor that is either bland or somewhat off. Natural ones have a flavour that is matchless.
