By Jasmine Kaur

The highlight of most Onam celebrations is the lavish 26-course feast that is prepared. In it go, several appetizers, desserts and loads of vegetarian curries like these.

Pachadi

It is a bitter-gourd curry, that is dunked into a coconut-based gravy and made creamy with some yoghurt. Turmeric powder is added to lend it yellow colour.

Olan

A creamy coconut curry, Olan is an intrinsic part of Onam Sadya. White gourd and black-eyed peas go into the making of this yummy dish.

Ulli Theeyal

This is a very interesting curry that is made with only shallots and roasted coconut. While the tiny onions lends a juicy flavour, roasted coconut makes the curry rustic.

Parippu Curry

A humble lentil preparation made with moong dal, coconut milk adds creaminess to the curry. It is tempered with red and green chillies along with mustard seeds.

Kaalan Curry

The classic Kerala raw banana curry is a central part of the festive treat. All you need are some bananas dipped in coconut and yoghurt and you are sorted.
