Modak, for the unversed, is a sweet preparation comprising of dumpling-shaped bites. Modak is a famous sweet in the region, believed to have originated in the region of Maharashtra. These modaks are served during Ganesh Chaturthi to Lord Ganesha. Legend has it that these modaks were prepared by Anasuya, who hosted Lord Shiva and Ganesha in the forest. She served only one sweetened ball to Lord Ganesha first, after which he burped loudly. Following this, Lord Shiva burped 21 times and Goddess Parvati became inquisitive. She was told later that it is modak that satisfied both of them and that is how she announced that Lord Ganesha should be offered 21 modaks on Ganpati pooja.
