Omurice or Omu-rice is a classic example of a Yoshuku or a Western-influenced Japanese food. It is essentially an omelette whcih comprises a filling of fried rice, thin and fried scrambled eggs. It may be topped with tomato ketchup and it is particularly a hit among kids. As far as the etymology of the word is concerned, the word omu and raisu are said to be Japanese pronunciation of the English words 'omelette' and 'rice'.
Omurice is not a very old recipe, in fact, it is said that it originated around the turn of the 20th century, at Renga-tei, a western-style restaurant in Tokyo's Ginza district, inspired by chakin-zushi. This recipe has eggs stuffed with chicken rice and peas. Season it with salt and pepper and serve hot. It is easier than you think it is. Follow this recipe to the T and inpress everyone at home. You can also serve it for brunch.
