A simple snack eaten for breakfast or at tea time, madakkappam is a thin crepe filled with a mixture of jaggery and coconut. It's a traditional Kerala-style dish. Madakku translates to 'folded', and 'appam' is a pancake, so the word means folded pancake. It can be made both sweet or savoury.
Other versions of sweet crepes like Madakkappam exist in India. Bengalis make Patishapta, which is also a thin crepe, filled with coconut and kheer. Patishapta is eaten during Makar Sankranti and may be considered a cousin of Madakkappam. Madakkappam is fondly called “love letter” since the stuffing is carefully and lovingly wrapped in the pancake. Also called Mutta Maida Appam, the dish is best enjoyed hot.
