A special dessert dish that is popularly eaten as Mahaprasad in Odisha, Khaja is a crispy dessert made from refined flour and sugar. Wheat-based desserts were commonplace in Odisha and the Silao Khaja was a result of the same. This dessert was quite a rage during the era of Mauryas when this dish emerged from a small village called Silao, placed between Mithila and Bihar. The monks and scholars travelled their way from Nalanda and introduced the Khaja to the region of Puri. The sweet meat is also mentioned in some 13th century texts.The Jagganath Puri temple is one of the most renowned ancient temples of Odisha and the preparation of 56 bhog or Chhappan bhog is quite famous there, The Khaja is a part of this bhog. Khaja is the mouth watering sweet. It's recipe is a bit different than normal Indian Sweets but tastes amazing. Served on sal leaves, the Khaja attains a distinct aroma.
