The culinary world is vast and getting to know every dish and cuisine in the world is next to impossible. But there are some which are universally known, loved and now celebrated thanks to Taste Atlas’ round-up of the 100 Best Dishes in the World. Yesterday the Croatia-based food guide revealed its picks for the 100 Best Cuisines in the World where India ranked at number 11 and the Top 3 spots were taken by Italy, Japan and Greece respectively. 

They later dropped a further breakdown of the world’s best in the form of the 100 best dishes. Let’s take a look at what made it to the Top 10.

1. Picanha

Leading the charge is the Brazilian dish which is a speciality of churrascarias or Brazilian steakhouses. It’s made with the top sirloin cap cut of beef which is skewered, seasoned mildly with herbs and salt and then grilled on open coals. Since it’s a particularly fatty cut of meat, the dish is incredibly tender and flavourful.

2. Roti Canai

A dish with Indian roots, it’s a popular breakfast option in many parts of Southeast Asia including Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. The Roti Canai itself is made of a simple dough containing flour, ghee and water but can also be sweetened with condensed milk. The savoury versions are usually served alongside dal or curry and can also be stuffed with various ingredients and served on its own.

3. Phat Khaphrao

A special stir-fry dish fro Thailand, the essential elements consist of basil, stir-fried with minced meat (usually beef, chicken, or pork), garlic, sugar, and Thai chilli. The dish is flavoured with a blend of soy sauce, oyster sauce, and fish sauce. It may also include other ingredients like onions, bell peppers, and green beans.

4. Pizza Napoletana

Lauded as the first pizza ever created, the Napoletana or the Neapolitan as it’s also known was invented in Naples, Italy in the late 1800s. It’s simplicity at its best with a light dough that’s proofed overnight and topped with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil, cooked in a high-temperature wood oven and then finished with a drizzle of olive oil.

5. Guotie

A dumpling from the Northern parts of China is up next on the list. The pan-fried dumpling is typically, filled with minced pork, Chinese cabbage, scallions, ginger, rice wine, and sesame seed oil. It’s a popular street food with a variety of iterations depending on the region.

6. Khao Soi

Another Thai dish comes in at number six and it’s one that’s very familiar in India too. It is a luxurious curry-infused chicken and coconut milk broth accompanied by egg noodles in a creamy base. Typically, it is adorned with crispy fried noodles, boiled eggs, shallots, fried garlic, dried chilli, lime, and coriander.

7. Butter Garlic Naan

Indian food makes the top ten with this ever-popular bread. A simple dough made of flour, water, and ghee is kneaded and cooked in a tandoor until cooked and slightly browned. It’s then slathered with oodles of butter and fried garlic often along with a sprinkle of coriander. The perfect accompaniment to add meal, it’s hard to resist its charms. 

8. Tongbao

Soup Dumplings, also known as Baozi has roots in China and stand out as a delicacy in the Jiangsu Province, featuring a filling crafted from pork and crab roe. In the Henan Province, it takes on a distinct form with a pork filling. The gelatinous filling melts when steamed and gushes out when you take a bite.

9. Shashlik

A dish mostly attributed to Russia, the Caucasus and Central Asia, Shashlik is as simple as it is delicious. It usually features skewered, marinated meat that is grilled over a fire until slightly charred and oozing with flavour. 

10. Phaneang Curry

The top 10 is rounded off with another Thai dish which boasts a rich and creamy coconut milk base infused with aromatic herbs and spices. This indulgent curry often features tender meat, such as chicken or beef, delivering a harmonious blend of sweet, savoury, and spicy flavours.
