The sandwich is a pretty simple beast. Some filling, usually meat, vegetables and some dairy all ensconced between bread. But despite originating as a convenient way for workers to get a full meal while on the go, the concept has evolved to be an integral part of almost every cuisine in the world. This is probably down to the fact that sandwiches offer the perfect blank canvas on which to project any number of flavours. A sandwich filling is limited only by the availability of ingredients and the boundaries of your imagination, and as such it’s become a go-to format to showcase regional flavours.

On the occasion of World Sandwich Day 2023, let’s take a closer look at 7 sandwiches from across the world that embody the history of their native place.

7 International Sandwiches You Should Try

1. The Cuban Sandwich - Cuba/USA

The origin of the Cuban Sandwich (also sometimes called Cubano) is a complex one. Some say it dates back to indigenous tribes in Cuba, while others believe it was invented in Tampa, Florida by Cuba immigrant workers. An essential part of the sandwich is the Cuban bread, a crusty loaf made with lard, loaded up with meat slices usually pernil (roasted pork), salami or ham, plus thinly sliced dill pickles and cheese. It’s then put in a sandwich press called a plancha and toasted to perfection.

2. Philly Cheesesteak - USA

Few sandwiches have garnered as devoted a following as the Philly Cheese Steak. Allegedly created in the 1930s by Italian immigrants Pat and Harry Olivieri, this sandwich features thinly sliced rib-eye beef sizzled on a hot griddle, combined with American cheese, all nestled inside an Italian bread roll. Common toppings include sautéed onions, mushrooms, bell peppers, and hot sauce.

3. Bánh Mì - Vietnam

This Vietnamese speciality has links to the country’s French colonial past. Though traditional Vietnamese and French cuisines are worlds apart, for the 150-odd years they occupied the country, French influences found their way into the Asian market and the Bahn Mi is a perfect example. It typically consists of a crispy baguette filled with mouthwatering ingredients like marinated grilled pork, fresh vegetables, cilantro and mayonnaise.

4. Reuben Sandwich - USA

Now you may think the iconic American sandwich has to be the hamburger, but the Reuben holds its own as an American favourite. It features a combination of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing nestled perfectly between slices of rye bread. The Reuben sandwich, perfectly grilled to bring out its flavours provides an indulgent eating experience that has become a beloved classic in delis and diners all, over the United States.

5. Croque Monsieur - France

Bread and ham are iconic pairings and France also has the Jambon Buerre, a sandwich that embodies that pairing. But for a more elevated experience, the Croque Monsieur is a delightful toasted ham and cheese sandwich. What sets it apart is the creamy béchamel sauce that's spread on top before grilling, resulting in a warm, cheesy, and comforting delight. For a more decadent twist, you can opt for the Croque Madame, which includes a fried egg on top.

6. Bombay Sandwich - India

From the busy streets of Mumbai, many tasty chaats and snack foods have emerged but none quite like the Bombay Sandwich. Traditionally in these vegetarian sandwiches, you might find a mixture of boiled potatoes, onions, cilantro, and a tangy green chutney. However, the options are vast, with variations that can include ingredients like cucumbers, tomatoes, cheese, and even a sprinkle of chaat masala for an extra burst of flavour.

7. The Michetta - Italy

You may know Italian cuisine mainly for its pastas and pizzas, but there’s also a sandwich that steals the show. The Michetta bread roll is a compact rounded bun that boasts a crispy exterior and a soft interior, creating a delightful textural experience. As for the fillings, the possibilities are endless. Traditionally, ham and cheese were the go-to choices, but nowadays you can explore a variety of options, from avocado and smoked salmon to sweet combinations like dark chocolate and strawberries.
