According to a study published in the Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research, 1997, Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids in foods like salmon, flaxseed and eggs work wonders for both dogs and cats keeping their fur moisturised and reducing shedding. Vitamin E-rich foods like sunflower oil or leafy greens promote skin health. Adding proteins like chicken or turkey can also strengthen hair follicles and prevent breakage.

Foods Good For Your Pets Coats: 

Eggs

According to the Animal Welfare Board of India, packed with bioavailable protein, eggs will keep your dog’s coat shiny and healthy. They are also full of zinc which supports protein synthesis and cell division to help heal wounds and build connective tissue. The biotin in the yolk helps produce keratin which is good for healthy hair and nails and alleviates skin allergies.

Tip: Do not give raw eggs as they contain avidin which interferes with biotin absorption. Cook them lightly and do not overcook them to preserve nutrients.

Sweet Potatoes

If your dog is itchy, sweet potatoes are a great allergy-friendly carb. According to the Animal Welfare Board of India, they are easy to digest when cooked and sliced, and cooking increases the vitamin C content which is good for skin protection from sun damage and wound healing.

Carrots

Crunchy and easy to chew, carrots will clean your dog’s teeth and provide beta-carotene which is a precursor to vitamin A. As per the study published in Frontiers of Plant Science, 2023, Vitamin A will repair skin, reduce irritation and promote eye health, and vitamin K will help with wound healing. If your dog has dry, flaky skin, the extra vitamin A in carrots may help.

Bananas
