To lose body weight, one needs to be consistent, patient, and determined even before starting with a diet plan and fitness regime. You might be searching for the best possible ways to shed those extra kilos, but what you may not realise is that the first thing to keep in mind is that there is no magic pill or one plan that can make you achieve the desired body. It is a gradual process that requires patience, persistence, and commitment more than drastic dietary changes or fad diets. Of course, your diet plays a huge role in achieving weight loss goals, but does that mean you let go of wholesome, nutritious meals? No.

Many of the Indian regional dishes are such that they can aid in weight loss, and are also super comforting, nourishing as well as delicious. Rasam, for instance, is a shorba-like soup and lentil curry, which is made across many south Indian homes, and can be a great addition in your weight loss diet.

It is a comfort food for many that can also relieve colds and coughs. Mostly made with dal as a base, rasam recipes vary in different homes. Tamarind, along with cumin, curry leaves, and asafoetida are some of the traditional ingredients in rasam, while something like lemon rasam doesn’t use tamarind at all.

Rasam is also known with different names in different places. While it is called ‘saaru’ in Kannada, it is known as rasam in Tamil Nadu and Kerala and ‘chaaru’ in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Here we bring you four South Indian rasam recipes that may help you shed those extra kilos.

1. Poondu Rasam

Poondu or garlic rasam is a spicy and sour rasam that serves a balance of health and taste. While garlic has low calorie content that may help in weight loss, this recipe also consists of chana dal, which is rich in protein that can ultimately lead to weight loss.

2. Ulava Chaaru

This Andhra-style rasam is made with the goodness of horse gram (kulthi dal). According to experts, horse gram is loaded with protein, dietary fibre, vitamins, and minerals and is low in calories – all of which makes it a perfect ingredient for a weight-loss friendly rasam. Add to it a mixture of delectable spices, and this rasam is worth every bite.

3. Pepper Rasam

Replete with ingredients that facilitate digestion and aid weight loss, this pepper rasam is full of spices such as haldi, garlic and black pepper. You can consume it in the evening or for lunch as well. Also known as milagu rasam, this recipe can be served with steamed rice.

4. Lemon-Ginger Rasam

A combination of lemon and ginger is known to aid a sore throat and cold, but did you know it is incredible for weight loss as well? It packs a bunch of antioxidants which are perfect for your weight loss diet.
