Today, if you take a stroll around the streets of Mumbai, you are bound to find carts of vada pav, pav bhaji and batata vada lined up. Amidst this crowd of pavs lies a humble sandwich that offers a plethora of flavours. Popularly known as the Bombay sandwich, this tasty treat is believed to be a gift of the English in some ways. Although the recipe of this sandwich was devised in the city of dreams, the idea of a sandwich was introduced to us by the British.

The Bombay sandwich is believed to have been invented out of a need to serve the hungry labourers. During the 1960s, there was an upsurge in the migrant population in Mumbai due to the expanding textile industry. In order to feed the labourers working in the factories with cheap and affordable meals, the Bombay sandwich was created. Layered with vegetables like tomatoes, onions, capsicum and a host of condiments like mint chutney and more, the sandwich also packs in some spicy mashed potatoes that make it a solid street snack.
