Garlic is one of the most popular flavouring agents that we find in different cuisines. It is undoubtedly one of the most versatile ingredients. While garlic is commonly used in Indian kitchens in grated, diced, or chopped form, we have found an all-new interesting way to add the strong and flavourful ingredient to your dishes - homemade garlic oil. Just how truffle oil, almond oil, rosemary oil, and many such oils impart a unique taste and aroma, garlic oil too can jazz up your mundane meals like never before.  

And while one can get garlic oil in supermarts, a Reddit user shared a simple recipe for homemade garlic oil that has gone viral ever since. User JimmyxChanga posted the picture and recipe on the sub-Reddit r/Food and explained ‘garlic oil is made from garlic and vegetable oil heated at a low temperature with consistent and constant stirring’. He further made a comparison between the homemade garlic oil, prepared using fresh garlic, and the store-bought one, which is made from jarred garlic. And the homemade version looked so much better.

The making of garlic oil is quite similar to how an Indian tadka is made. The Reddit user shared the recipe for people to try at home. Here's it goes: 

  • Use one part garlic and one part vegetable oil. You can play with the ratios however you like, depending on the quantity. 
  • Heat the oil over low to medium heat in a wok till the garlic begins to splutter. It is recommended to keep stirring at a constant speed for the entire cooking process. 
  • Remove the oil once the garlic is sputtering. If you remove it too late, the oil will taste like burnt garlic. Too early, and you are sacrificing the deliciousness of the garlic oil. 
  • To stir the oil, use a wooden spatula, about the length of three toothbrushes 
  • Your garlic oil is ready. 
  • You can use this garlic oil to top fried rice, noodles, fish, fried vegetables, or any curry.
