Mythological Significance

According to the Hindu mythology, the colour yellow is deeply associated with the concept of wisdom and gurus. Hindu gods like Lord Dattatreya, Vrihaspati and Dakshinamurti are believed to impart wisdom and are adorned in yellow. And as Goddess Saraswati is known as the goddess of learning and wisdom, the colour yellow comes into play on Vasant Panchami.

Cultural Significance

The season of spring (vasant) is yellow (vasanti). Wearing and consuming yellow foods is a ritual to pay tribute to mother nature and Goddess Saraswati. Coincidentally, during this time, mustard seeds also start ripening and this bejewel planet earth with a bright yellow hue.

Scientific Significance

The cultural practices that Indians follow have deep scientific significance too. And as we are discussing the significance of yellow foods on Vasant Panchami, this practice also has scientific grounds. Our immunity system slows down in the transitioning phase from winters to spring. The yellow food that we consume (including turmeric, saffron, etc.) are great antibiotics and antiseptics that enhance our immune system.
