Have you ever opened the social media accounts of your favourite actor to catch up with their glitzy, glam celebrity life and ended up getting food goals from their feed? This happened to us when we looked at actor Varun Dhawan’s Instagram story, where he posted a picture of delicious looking sushi. Varun’s picture of sushi surely made us want to try it out at our nearest Japanese restaurant.

Varun was out with a friend, enjoying his Japanese lunch and it was enough to give us some serious food goals. The actor’s sushi platter looked colourful and delicious, with five different varieties right there. The plate also had a few dim sums, which looked equally tempting. Accompanying the meal were glasses of fruit juice and the entire meal looked super yummy.

This Japanese delicacy has slowly become one of the most popular dishes in urban India, and people are trying different varieties of it. While sushi is originally non-vegetarian, several versions of the dish are vegetarian, and if you do not eat meat, we have six different varieties of sushi that you must try.

Mango Sushi

Mango sushi is a delightful fusion of flavours that combines the sweetness of ripe mangoes with the savoury elements of sushi. The sushi roll typically features a layer of sticky sushi rice topped with thin slices of juicy mango. The vibrant colours and contrasting textures create a visually appealing dish. The natural sweetness of the mango complements the tanginess of the sushi rice, while the soft, buttery texture adds a unique twist.

Pickled Radish Sushi

Also known as takuan maki, it is a traditional Japanese sushi roll that incorporates tangy pickled radishes. The pickled radish, or takuan, adds a burst of flavour and a satisfying crunch to the sushi roll. The vibrant yellow color of the radish stands out against the white sushi rice, creating an aesthetically pleasing dish. The pickling process imparts a sour and slightly sweet taste to the radish, which provides a refreshing contrast to the savoury rice in the sushi roll.

Avocado Roll

The avocado roll is a popular and classic vegetarian sushi variety. It features a filling of ripe avocado slices wrapped in a sheet of nori (seaweed), along with seasoned sushi rice. The creamy texture of the avocado contrasts beautifully with the chewy rice, creating a simple yet flavourful sushi roll.

Cucumber Roll

The cucumber roll is a refreshing vegetarian sushi option that showcases the crispness of cucumber. Thin strips of cucumber are used as the filling, rolled tightly with sushi rice and nori. The result is a light and refreshing roll that provides a satisfying crunch with every bite.

Vegetable Tempura Roll

For those who enjoy crispy and fried element in their sushi, the vegetable tempura roll is an excellent choice. Assorted vegetables such as sweet potatoes, bell peppers, zucchini, or eggplant are dipped in tempura batter and deep-fried until golden. These crispy tempura vegetables are then wrapped in sushi rice and nori to create a delicious and satisfying vegetarian sushi roll.

Asparagus Roll

The asparagus roll offers a unique and delicate flavour profile. Fresh asparagus spears are blanched or lightly steamed before being rolled with sushi rice and nori. The result is a roll that highlights the natural sweetness and tender texture of asparagus, providing a delightful alternative to traditional fish-based sushi rolls.

These vegetarian sushi varieties showcase the creativity and versatility of plant-based ingredients in Japanese cuisine. Whether you prefer the refreshing crunch of cucumber, the crispy satisfaction of tempura vegetables, or the delicate flavour of asparagus, these vegetarian sushi options provide a delightful and satisfying dining experience for foodies. And if, like us, you too are inspired by Varun Dhawan to fight the Monday blues with the awesomeness of sushi, try out these vegetarian options.
