The pale sister to the red wine, white wine is made from grapes, leaving out the grape skin which is as old as four thousand years. Some white wines are completely transparent while some appear to have a pale yellow or green hue. The colour vastly differs depending on the grapes used and also the process of fermentation and duration.

But all this technicality aside, white wine tastes quite refreshing and lovely with a touch of light and fruity flavours. White wine can be either sweet or dry. Sweet wine is as the name suggests sweet in taste while dry wine is not on the sweet side.

Depending on your palette, you’d prefer one wine over another. Read below to find out what wine is in store for you.

Chardonnay

The most common white wine on the market, Chardonnay can be still and sparkling. Originating from Bourgogne in France, Chardonnay is velvety and citrusy. Since they are prepared in oak barrels, the beverage can have flavours of coconut, toffee and vanilla. This pair well with chicken and fish dishes.

Sauvignon Blanc

Traditionally from the region of Bordeaux in France, a glass of Sauvignon Blanc has a less fruity flavour and tends to be flatter. It has a warmer herby taste. Sauvignon Blanc goes great with a bowl of salad or dish of poultry.

Moscato

With lower alcohol content, the Moscato is made from muscat grapes. This wine is sweet with a fruity and musky aroma. This is produced mostly in warmer regions like Rhône Valley in Australia and Austria. It is also a relatively cheaper wine.

Pinot Grigio

A glass of Pinot Grigio pairs well with almost anything, especially with spicy food. It is quite a versatile wine with a “crisp” profile. It is much less sweet and sometimes referred to as the pinot noir of white wines.
