It is a combination of lentils like black gram, sesame seeds, curry leaves, black pepper, cumin, and peanuts. You can always add the ingredients of your choice to give it a different touch. Every single household has a different recipe for podi but the thing which is similar in its presence. One can add ghee, oil, curd, or even water to the podi and have it with idli, dosa, rice, and many other South Indian dishes.

Let us tell you that the concept of podi actually originated back in the time of the Vijayanagar dynasty. This empire was situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, present-day Karnataka, and it eventually got famous all across the country’s Southern region. Even today, podi is a popular condiment in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana.
Personally speaking, I have fallen in love with this amazing thing. What made me love it, even more, is as it is one of the tastiest variations which is peanut karam podi. Peanut karam podi is a clear steal that would make you a fan of its distinct flavours. Believe me, once you try this, there is no looking back. Since I have praised it so much, it is my duty to share its recipe with you. So, here is the recipe of this utterly delicious peanut karam podi that you must must try.
Ingredients
- 6 dried red chilies
- 1 cup peanuts
- 2 tsp oil
- 10 curry leaves
- 6 garlic cloves (with the peel)
- ¼ cup dried and grated coconut
- Salt to taste
Method
- Take a pan and heat oil in it
- Add the red chilies and roast them for 30 to 40 seconds
- Add in the peanuts and mix them well
- Now add curry leaves and cook them all until they turn crispy
- Turn off the flame and keep the mixture aside for sometime
- After the mixture gets cool down, take a grinder and add the mixture
- Now add garlic cloves, coconut, and salt
- Grind and form a coarse powder
- Your peanut karam podi is ready
- Eat it with rice while adding a lot of ghee. Have fun!!
