India is known for its many varieties of mango. From Chausa to Dussehri and Langda, one can pick several kinds of the ‘king of fruits’ during its season. The taste and texture of each of them is what makes them unique. To celebrate and recognise mango varieties in the country, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has recently flagged off the ‘Lucknow Aam Mahotsav’ at Awadh Shilpa Gram in the city. The annual fest is happening after a gap of two years.
Since UP accounts for 22% of the mango production, which is the largest in the country, Lucknow was chosen as the ideal ground for this four-day festival. People started visiting the festival from July 5. On display are more than 700 varieties of mangoes sourced from different parts of the country like Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and UP. Along with this, several other activities related to mangoes have also been organised at the fair.

These include a mango orchard tour, mango eating competitions as well as display of several mango-based dishes. The idea behind this festival is to encourage the farmers to use organic farming techniques for production of mangoes so that there is a natural cultivation of mangoes in the country. Several progressive farmers and gardeners have joined the festival and are bringing their regional mango species on one platform for the visitors to see and try.
The prospect of upscaling mango production in the country is one of the highlights of the festival. In addition to this, the special variety of Lucknow mangoes have been named Kakori and are being planned to be exported internationally. This would result in a widespread distribution of Indian mangoes abroad and increase the awareness about the rich mango variety in the country.
