Since House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy revealed their favourite cocktail was a Negroni Sbagliato (with prosecco), the internet has gone wild for it. The Negroni has already been having its moment in the sun being one of the most popular comeback cocktails around these days and many variations on the classic, but this twist has sparked a new trendy revolution. Bye bye Aprerol Spritz, hello Negroni Sbagliato.

Now we all know that according to the meme, they say “Negroni Sbagliato…with Prosecco in it.” but in reality, that’s a bit of a misnomer. In Italian, ‘sbagliato’ literally translates to ‘mistake’ or ‘broken’ and in the context of the cocktail, the broken aspect is that the traditional Gin is replaces with prosecco. So in reality, it’s not a Negroni with additional prosecco, it’s an entirely prosecco-based drink to begin with.

If you’re feeling really fancy you can always switch the prosecco for champagne, but no need to dole out the extra cash if you don’t feel like it, any sparkling wine will fit the bill just fine. Thankfully, though it sounds like a complicated cocktail, it’s actually very simple to whip up at home. As with the Negroni, the Sbagliato can also be served on the rocks or up, in a Champagne flute, much like the traditional Negroni is served over ice or in a stem glass. Try it next time you’re tuning into the next episode and sip along like a queen.

Ingredients:

  • 25ml Campari
  • 25ml sweet vermouth
  • Prosecco to top up
  • Ice
  • For the garnish
  • 1 orange slice

Method:

  • In a glass pour the Campari and sweet vermouth
  • Add cubed ice and gently add in the prosecco – pouring it down a bar or long spoon that's been placed in the glass will stop the bubbles roaming over the edge of the glass.
  • Stir the contents of the glass together, top up further and garnish with the orange slice.
