In March this year, India’s ever-evolving culinary brilliance took centre stage when three exceptional restaurants secured their place among Asia’s elite. The establishments were Masque, Indian Accent and Avartana, which made their mark on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants rankings, now in its 11th edition. A closer look at each of these three restaurants offers a few takeaways in the directions in which the Indian culinary scene is moving, and how rewarding each of these paths has proved to be — for the establishments themselves, and their patrons.

INDIAN ACCENT, NEW DELHI

Moving up from its previous position at #22, Indian Accent secured an impressive 19th spot when the latest rankings were released at the end of March. The upward climb reflects its continued dedication to culinary excellence and innovation. Helmed by Chef Manish Mehrotra, the New Delhi eatery combines traditional Indian flavours with global influences. Indeed, Indian Accent has garnered international recognition for its inventive approach to Indian cuisine. Its menu showcases the richness and complexity of Indian flavours, presented with artistic flair and impeccable technique. From locally sourced ingredients to the harmonious fusion of spices, Indian Accent takes diners on a gustatory adventure they won’t quite forget. Every dish is crafted to tell a story and leave an enduring impression.

AVARTANA, CHENNAI

Avartana at ITC Grand Chola in Chennai was making its grand debut on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list this year, securing an impressive #30 rank. Led by Chef Sricharan Venkatesh, Avartana offers a contemporary twist on traditional South Indian dishes, earning a well-deserved reputation as one of the city’s finest restaurants. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka — Avartanas’ menu takes diners through the diverse flvourscapes of South India. A delicate balance of flavours, use of vibrant colours and exquisite presentation make Avartana a standout culinary destination in Chennai.

Indian restaurants also feature on the list of 51-100 best restaurants from Asia. Mumbai's The Table and Americano, as well as Bukhara from New Delhi’s ITC Maurya are joined for the first time by Mumbai’s Ekaa (helmed by chef Niyati Rao and restaurateur Sagar Neve, positioned at a respectable #93). Ekaa's cuisine-agnostic approach celebrates locally-sourced ingredients, with each dish highlighting a single hero ingredient, thus earning the restaurant its name, which means "the one."

India's presence among Asia's 50 Best Restaurants, both within the top rankings and the extended list, showcases the country’s diverse culinary offerings, innovative chefs, and dedication to creating extraordinary dining experiences. These exceptional establishments bring India’s rich culinary heritage to the forefront, reimagining traditional flavours and techniques with modern interpretations. If Indian Accent dazzles with its fusion of Indian and global influences, then the culinary prowess of Avartana and Masque celebrates the bountiful local ingredients of India with artistic flair. Together, they showcase the diversity, complexity, and extraordinary talent within India’s culinary landscape, encapsulating Indian gastronomy at its finest.
