Papad, or poppadom, has made its presence felt in many culinary cultures. For me, though, this traditional, spiced crispbread is my go-to snack in between work as well as my dinnertime side dish. Although our grannies were indeed proficient in making papad, are we even aware of their recipes? Maybe not. So, let’s find out the numerous methods to make papads at home. Here are some tasty dishes using papads:

Papad Samosa

Ingredients:

  1. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  2. Green chilli - 2 chopped
  3. Garam masala - 1/2 tsp
  4. Salt - as per taste
  5. Red chilli - 1/2 tsp
  6. Cumin - 1/2 tsp
  7. Cashew - 1 tsp
  8. Moong - 1 cup
  9. Oil - as required
  10. Papad - 4

Method:

  1. Soak the moong dal in the water a day before. The next day, put it in a mixer and grind it well.
  2. Heat oil, add cumin seeds and green chillies in a pan.
  3. After frying for some time, add ground moong and cook it well
  4. Then, add garam masala, turmeric powder, red chilli, salt and mix well
  5. After cooking for about 5-6 minutes, add cashew nuts and turn off the gas
  6. Now, place the moong dal stuffing in the middle of the papad and seal the edges of the papad with wheat flour
  7. In a pan, heat oil and fry it until it becomes golden

Papad Fritters

Ingredients:

  1. Cabbage - 1 cup finely chopped
  2. Amchur powder - 1/2 tsp
  3. Capsicum - 1/2 chopped
  4. Salt - according to taste
  5. Green chilli - 2 chopped
  6. Cornflour - 1 tsp
  7. Potato - 2 boiled
  8. Flour - 2 cups
  9. Oil - 2 cups
  10. Papad - 3

Method:

  1. First, put boiled potatoes, green chillies, capsicum, cabbage and salt in a vessel and mix them well.
  2. Now, make fritters out of this mixture.
  3. Prepare a batter by adding all-purpose flour and cornflour; put the fritters in the flour mixture and mix them well.
  4. In a pan, fry the fritters well in heated oil till they turn golden
  5. Papad fritters are ready to serve with sauce or chutney.

Papad Raita

Ingredients:

  1. Roasted salt - according to taste
  2. Black pepper powder - 1/2 tsp
  3. Coriander leaves - 2 tsp
  4. Cumin powder - 1/2 tsp
  5. Curd - 3 cups
  6. Papad - 3

Method:

  1. First, put curd in a vessel and beat it well; now, fry the papads well in a pan.
  2. Add roasted cumin powder, black pepper and salt to this curd and mix well
  3. After this, keep this mixture in the fridge for some time
  4. Now, break the roasted papad into pieces and top it with coriander leaves
  5. Papad raita is ready to serve
