Cleaning kitchen tools can be a challenge especially on days you have to cut and prep different kinds of veggies and produce. There are some functional ways to minimise your effort when it comes to cleaning individual tools. Take the garlic press, for instance.

Most garlic presses have numerous small holes through which the garlic is forced. These tiny apertures are essential for creating finely minced garlic but are also the main culprits for trapping garlic residue. The small size makes it difficult for water and cleaning tools to penetrate and remove the stuck particles effectively.

Besides garlic contains natural oils and juices that are sticky and adhere firmly to surfaces. When garlic is pressed, its juices and pulp can coat the press, especially in the small holes and crevices. The stickiness of garlic makes it challenging to wash off with just water. A common solution is to use a baking soda paste which can act as a scrub and can get rid of stubborn residues and stains. Here are some other common ways of cleaning your garlic press at home.

Immediate Rinsing

One of the most straightforward ways to keep your garlic press clean is to rinse it immediately after use. Garlic residue hardens and becomes more difficult to remove if left to dry, so prompt rinsing can save you a lot of effort. Hold the garlic press under warm running water right after you've finished pressing the garlic.

The water pressure will help wash away the majority of the residue. To get into the small crevices and holes, use a small brush, such as an old toothbrush or a specialized cleaning brush designed for kitchen tools. The bristles can reach into the tiny spaces and dislodge any bits of garlic that are stuck. Immediate rinsing prevents the buildup of residue and makes subsequent cleanings much easier.

Soaking in Warm Soapy Water

If you can't clean the garlic press immediately, soaking it in warm soapy water is an effective alternative. Fill a bowl or your sink with warm water and add a few drops of dish soap. Submerge the garlic press and let it soak for about 10-15 minutes. This soaking process helps to loosen any dried garlic particles, making them easier to remove. After soaking, use a brush or a small cleaning tool to scrub away any remaining residue. The warm, soapy water will soften the garlic, allowing it to come off more easily. Rinse the press thoroughly with clean water and let it air dry or dry it with a clean towel.

Using a Toothpick or a Pin

For particularly stubborn pieces of garlic stuck in the holes of the press, a toothpick or a pin can be incredibly useful. These small tools can reach into the tight spaces and dislodge trapped garlic. Carefully push the toothpick or pin through each hole in the press to remove any stuck pieces. This method is especially helpful for cleaning metal garlic presses with fine holes. After dislodging the garlic bits, rinse the press under warm water to wash away any remaining debris. Using a toothpick or a pin ensures that every tiny bit of garlic is removed, preventing any buildup that could affect the performance of the press.

Dishwasher Safe Cleaning

Many modern garlic presses are designed to be dishwasher safe, making cleaning them extremely convenient. If your garlic press is labelled as dishwasher safe, place it in the dishwasher along with your other utensils. Ensure that it is securely positioned to allow water to reach all parts of the press. The high temperature and detergent in the dishwasher will thoroughly clean the garlic press, removing any residue. This method not only saves time but also ensures a hygienic clean, as the hot water and detergent can kill bacteria that might be present in the press.
