All About Shrimp Or Prawn Toast

Prawn toast is a pretty established and well-known Cantonese dim sum dish that originated in Hong Kong.  Even this is a fusion dish that combines popular prawn paste of Hong Kong and the toast of the West. These are small triangles of bread coated with a paste made from minced shrimps and are either baked or deep fried. These are eaten popularly as appetisers in Western Chinese cuisine. This snack slowly infiltrated borders and is as much popular today in neighbouring countries like Vietnam, Thailand and even Japan.

How Healthy Are Prawns?

The tiny aquatic crustacean is extremely popular among a variety of seafood eaten worldwide. These contain all 9 essential amino acids that our body needs and are still low in calories. Besides these are abundant sources of Vitamin B-12, B-6, and Niacin that help in building muscle and replenishing red blood cells.

Preparation: 15 minutes

Cooking: 5 minutes

Servings: 8 slices of toast

Ingredients:

For Making Prawn Paste :

  • 100 gm prawns (Deveined)
  • ¼  tsp chilli flakes
  • ½  tsp ginger (Minced)
  • ½  tsp garlic (Minced)
  • ¼  tsp light soy sauce
  • ¼  tsp fish sauce
  • Zest of 1 Lemon
  • ⅛  tsp salt
  • ⅛  tsp black pepper powder
  • ½  egg white

For Coating and Frying Prawn Bread :

  • 2 bread slices (cut into 4 triangles)
  • 1 ½  tbsp sesame seeds (White & Black)
  • Oil
  • Dried Parsley (for Garnish)
  • 1 ½  tbsp black and white sesame seeds

Method:

  • Take deveined prawn in a blender jar
  • To this add chilli flakes, ginger, garlic, light soya sauce, fish sauce, half an egg, lemon, salt, lemon and black pepper powder and blend them to a fine paste. Keep it aside
  • Now, remove the corners of the bread and cut them into four slices
  • Apply the paste with a spoon over each bread slice and sprinkle a little bit of sesame seeds mix over it
  • Arrange the rest of the slices like that as well
  • Dip the bread slice in with the prawn side down and cook for about 2 minutes
  • Use forks to flip the bread slices and cook for just 1 minute and take out on a tissue paper
  • Sprinkle dried parsley a little bit over the toast

The quantity of oil is just enough for bread slices to dip a little bit in the oil and enable faster cooking of prawn paste. Using a flat base frying pan would be better in this case than wok or kadhai. Sesame seeds are optional and can be skipped. It's super easy to make on any evening and undoubtedly nutritious too to meet health concerns. For the ones who like prawns, this is surely a desired treat made with hardly any effort.
