In adults, prolonged exposure can cause kidney dysfunction, neurological damage, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of cancer. More alarmingly, even low levels of lead exposure can severely affect children, resulting in permanent intellectual disabilities, behavioural disorders, and learning difficulties. The developing nervous system in children is particularly vulnerable, making them more susceptible to the harmful effects of lead.

The authorities had reportedly received a citizen complaint about the presence of cockroaches at a Chinese restaurant in Central Avenue and food inspectors found the complaint had merit. According to sources, several spice samples collected from various restaurants across the city were also found to be adulterated. During this civic drive, many restaurants were fined between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh for failing to adhere to safety standards.

Reports also state the owner of one restaurant in the Park Street area was fined 3 lakhs over failed safety checks and has challenged the fine in Calcutta High Court. The poor quality of water across several restaurants was a major issue and reports claim that several restaurants across the city use water filters that have not been cleaned or serviced for a long time.

In the last few months, food safety checks across the country have brought to light severe violations across restaurants in states like Hyderabad, Pune, Kerala, Karnataka etc. A few weeks ago, some of the most renowned Hyderabad restaurants were inspected for food safety violations.

Recently the Telangana Commissioner of Food Safety's task force inspected 83 restaurants across Hyderabad, finding violations in 68. Expired and unlabelled food, lack of hygiene and improper storage were some of the big issues and noteworthy restaurants like Rameshwaram Cafe and Shah Ghouse, faced fines and issued statements about the same.
