When in Maharashtra, indulging in plates of zanzanit misal pav is a must—and this is especially true for the city of Pune, which prides itself on making the spiciest versions of this street food snack. Punekars not only love indulging in misal pav but also have a dedication towards perfecting it for the pleasure of tourists and locals alike. And this love for misal pav has been highlighted once again by the record-breaking feat accomplished by a local group called Pune Ekta Misal. 

On April 14, the group made a whopping 10,000 kilos of misal to mark the occasion of ambedkar Jayanti, which is observed every year to celebrate the life and contributions of Bhimrao Ambedkar, the Father of the Indian Constitution. In multiple clips shared on Instagram, the group’s members can be seen stirring in the ingredients for the misal in a gigantic vessel. For those unaware, the misal is the spicy gravy that is topped with sev, farsaan, onions and more and served with fresh pav bread.

According to reports, the making of the 10,000 kilo misal took 1000 kilos of matki (sproutd mung beans), 800 kilos of onions, 200 kilos of ginger, 200 kilos of garlic, 700 kilos of oil, 140 kilos of misal masala, 40 kilos of red chilli powder, 40 kilos of turmeric powder, 50 kilos of salt, 140 kilos of coconut, 7 kilos of tamal leaves, 2500 kilos of farsaan, and 10,000 litres of water. 125 bunches of coriander and 1000 lemons also went into the making of the dish. 

Organised by the Kranti Surya Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti Committee, the entire cooking was done by members of the Pune Ekta Misal group. Clips from the event show onlookers cheering on the cooks. The misal was later served with bread and pav to over a lakh people. The event was also graced by the presence of Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
