Fish is a staple in Bengali households, traditions, and festivals. Since a Bengali meal is incomplete without fish, it is evident that there’s a large list of fish recipes hailing from the state. Depending on whether it's a celebration, a special occasion, or an everyday meal, fish  dishes are always a part of the meal.

Fishes are used to prepare aromatic curries, crunchy snacks, pulao or just enjoyed as a fried treat. Typically, the curries are prepared with very little spice. But freshwater fishes are often prepared with a few chillies, seasoned with mustard oil and ghee, and then served with rice.

Fish marinated in spices and covered in gram flour and breadcrumbs are also deep-fried to make tasty fish fillets, a beloved Bengali tea-time snack. Fish dishes like paturi, bhape, or kaliyacan are a go-to for special occasions like weddings and holidays. Hilsa is a Bengali favourite that is adapted into various dishes and famously paired with mustard to enhance flavour.
