Priyanka Chopra Jonas may be one of the biggest global stars now, but the ‘desi girl’ remains very rooted to her culture and traditions. Not only does she celebrate all Indian festivals with much splendour with her family, she also opened an Indian restaurant in New York City called Sona. The actor also travels around the world for various work commitments. Currently, she is in Kenya, where she bumped into something called the ‘Kenyan Chevda’, and her joy knew no bounds.
Priyanka is in the African nation, owing to her association with UNICEF. On Wednesday, she shared many stories from Nairobi, one of which was a shout out to a deliciously crunchy snack in chilli lemon flavour. The ‘Kenyan Chevda’ didn’t look like the Indian Chivda, since the latter almost always comprises flattened rice flakes. But it did look a lot like our namkeen or sev, or the savoury nibbles made with besan and lots of seasoning. In the caption of the image, the Dil Dhadakne Do actor wrote, “Yasssss. Snack attack”.
Chiwda is a famous Indian snack, which is now gaining popularity across the world. It is a no-fuss munchie that can satiate you at any point of the day. Also known as cheera, cheere, poha and chidwa, these flattened rice flakes can be found across the country in various forms. In the South, they are used in dosa batter, while in Bihar, with a spoonful of dahi, they serve as an excellent and cooling breakfast option.
Speaking of breakfast, how can we not talk about our beloved poha. Poha is a tremendously popular breakfast item in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Here, flattened rice flakes are tossed in a pan with onions, chillies, mustard seeds, and salt, for a light and easy snack. It is then topped with sev and lemon juice. Here’s a quick recipe you can try at home.
