Talking about the rising trend of plant-based meat, Dr Preeti Seth says, “Plant-based meats have gained considerable traction in recent years. It’s fascinating to observe how companies like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods have transformed this sector. These alternatives have become a staple for many flexitarians—individuals who are not strictly vegetarian or vegan but are looking to reduce their meat intake for health or ethical reasons. The appeal of plant-based meat is evident in the growing demand. The primary drivers include animal welfare concerns, environmental sustainability, and the rising awareness of the health risks associated with excessive meat consumption. By offering a product that mimics the taste and texture of meat, these alternatives provide a familiar, convenient option for those looking to transition away from traditional meat. However, from a nutritional standpoint, while plant-based meats can offer protein and some essential nutrients, it’s important to remember that they are often processed and may contain added sodium, oils, and preservatives.

The nutritionist further advises, “Choosing convenience should not come at the cost of quality. If you are considering plant-based meats, I would recommend reading the labels carefully and ensuring they align with your health goals.”

Satvik Diet

“In contrast to plant-based meats, satvik foods offer a holistic, spiritual approach to nourishment. Deeply rooted in Ayurveda and yogic traditions, the satvik diet is about more than just the physical benefits. It emphasises the purity of ingredients, and its goal is to promote mental clarity, spiritual balance, and harmony within the body. I often see individuals who follow satvik principles experience a profound shift not just in their physical health but in their mental and emotional well-being. The diet consists of fresh, natural, and minimally processed foods—fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and dairy (for those who are not vegan). satvik foods are not designed to mimic meat or offer protein-heavy solutions but to nourish the body gently and consistently. In my view, the beauty of satvik food lies in its simplicity,” informs Dr Preeti Seth.

For people looking for guidance, she suggests, “Food should be your connection to life’s purity, not just a source of fuel. This diet, while naturally lower in protein compared to plant-based meats, is rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It supports overall longevity and inner peace.”

Looking at the trends and her clientele, the nutritionist dives down to compare the two, “The interest in plant-based meats is undeniably widespread, with celebrities, influencers, and environmental advocates championing these products. Their convenience and versatility make them a popular choice, especially in fast-paced urban settings where the demand for sustainable, ethical choices is growing. 

Satvik food, on the other hand, though not as widely promoted, has been experiencing a steady resurgence, particularly among those who follow yoga, meditation, and Ayurvedic practices. It may not have the same flashy appeal as plant-based meats, but it resonates with individuals seeking balance, peace, and holistic health.”

Satvik foods, by contrast, focus on whole, unprocessed ingredients. They are rich in micronutrients, fibre, and antioxidants but may be lower in protein, which could be a concern for individuals with higher protein needs. However, as I always stress, “True nourishment is more than just meeting your macronutrient goals; it’s about feeding your mind and soul with the right energy.”

When it comes to specific diets, my recommendation depends on the individual’s needs.

  • For vegans and vegetarians, plant-based meats are a convenient option, especially for those transitioning from a meat-heavy diet. 
  • However, if the focus is on holistic health, reducing stress, or pursuing spiritual well-being, satvik food may be a better choice. 
  • For keto enthusiasts, plant-based meats would align better due to their low carbohydrate content.
  • For those following a traditional yogic lifestyle or seeking mental clarity and emotional stability, satvik food offers a more aligned approach.

Dr Preeti Seth concludes, “Looking ahead, I see a bright future for both plant-based meats and satvik foods, though they will likely appeal to different segments of the population. Plant-based meats will continue to innovate, focusing on cleaner ingredients and improved nutritional profiles as consumers demand healthier, more sustainable options.
