In mid-1950s, when recreational and competitive bodybuilding became popular, Irvin P. Johnson began to market egg-based protein powders aimed specifically at bodybuilders and physical athletes. Today, the global dietary supplements market share (as of 2021) is valued at $151.9 billion and of that, the sub-segment of Proteins and Amino Acids are likely to witness the highest growth compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.4 per cent between 2022-2030. Protein supplements – be they in solid, liquid or powder form are being preferred courtesy the increasing awareness about health and diet consciousness.

Protein supplements, if not taken in excess, are seen to reduce blood pressure, total cholesterol and other risks for cardiovascular diseases. Protein also helps to bulk-up muscles in athletes who do strength training sessions like weight lifting and other resistance exercise training. Protein is also known to repair muscle and tissue and aid in recovery.
